Matte, gloss, spot UV or foil? Choosing a business card finish
2026-05-08 · 4 min

Your business card is often the first physical thing a client holds from your brand. The finish changes how it feels and the impression it leaves. Here's a plain-language guide.
Matte lamination
Smooth, soft and modern with no glare. Easy to write on. A safe, premium-feeling default for most professional brands.
Gloss lamination
The shine makes colours and photos pop. Great for retail, food and bold brands; less ideal if people need to write on the card.
Spot UV
A glossy varnish applied to specific areas (like your logo) over a matte card. The contrast feels expensive and draws the eye exactly where you want it.
Foil (gold/silver)
A metallic stamp for a luxury, high-end look. Perfect for executives, premium services and special editions.
Stock weight matters too
350gsm is the standard premium weight. Go to 400–600gsm for a substantial, luxury feel, or add painted/foiled edges for real wow factor.
